What should the dust mite allergy patient know?

Dust mite allergy is an allergic reaction to small insects that live in house dust, especially in mattresses, bedding and carpets.

A patient allergic to dust mites must understand several essential aspects in order to manage their condition effectively.

1- What are dust mites?

They are microscopic insects that live in house dust, especially in mattresses, bedding, carpets and upholstered furniture.

Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, congestion, itchy eyes, coughing and, in more severe cases, asthma.

2-. Environmental control measures:

  • Use anti-mite covers for mattresses and pillows. Wash bed linen weekly in hot water (at least 60°C).
  • Use HEPA-filtered hoovers and clean surfaces regularly to reduce dust.
  • Keep relative humidity below 50% in the home by using dehumidifiers and air conditioning.

3-. Medical treatment:

Antihistamines, decongestants and nasal corticosteroids can help control symptoms. However, for severe cases, immunotherapy (allergy shots) may be an effective long-term option.

4-. Lifestyle and habits:

  • Prefer wood or vinyl floors and minimise the use of carpets and soft toys.
  • Keep the home well ventilated and avoid dust accumulation.

5.- Sources of information and support:

  • Consult regularly with an allergist to personalise the management plan and receive up-to-date advice.
