Allergen immunotherapy, also known as desensitisation therapy, has several significant advantages in the treatment of allergies. First, it addresses the underlying cause of allergies by directly targeting the immune system. Through controlled and gradual exposure to specific allergens, the therapy aims to induce a more tolerant and less reactive immune response.
One of the key advantages is its ability to provide long-term effects. Many patients experience a significant reduction in symptoms even after completing treatment, suggesting a lasting change in the immune response.
Allergen immunotherapy may also prevent the progression of allergies. In some cases, early treatment may prevent mild allergies from developing into more severe conditions.
In addition, this form of therapy can improve quality of life by reducing the need for symptomatic medications and the frequency of doctor visits due to allergic reactions.
Although it requires commitment and patience, allergen immunotherapy is considered a valuable option for those seeking a more comprehensive and long-lasting approach to allergy management, significantly improving patients’ quality of life by offering a solution beyond symptomatic relief.
Tips for treatment with subcutaneous vaccines
It is recommended that the vaccine is always administered in a medical centre, following the guidelines established by your allergist. Ask your allergist about any doubts you may have and any possible symptoms you may notice.
- When transporting the vaccine to the medical centre, it is advisable to transport it in a refrigerated bag.
- It is recommended to wait at the medical centre for at least 30 minutes after administration of the vaccine, as this is the time when the most frequent adverse reactions may occur.
- Store the vaccine in the refrigerator at a temperature between 2ºC and 8ºC, never in the freezer. Avoid leaving the vaccine in very hot places or in direct sunlight.
- Do not administer the vaccine dose if you have poorly controlled asthma or if you are suffering from severe allergic symptoms.
- It is not recommended to administer the dose of allergy vaccine on the same day as other types of vaccines. A minimum interval of 3 to 4 days is recommended between each vaccine.
- It is recommended not to perform intense physical exercise in the 3 to 4 hours before and after the administration of the vaccine, since the resulting dilation of the blood vessels favours the possibility of a reaction.
