Prevalence of allergic rhinitis

What is the rhinitis?
Rhinitis is one of the most frequent chronic diseases in the world. It is characterized by symptomatic inflammation of the nasal mucosa and by the presence of one or more of the following symptoms: nasal congestion, anterior or posterior rhinorrhea, sneezing and itching for two or more consecutive days, for more than one hour almost every day; nasal obstruction is also common in preschoolers.

Prevalence of rhinitis
The prevalence of allergic diseases has increased dramatically in recent years, due to genetic and environmental factors. It is currently the most common immunological disorder affecting humans.

Allergic rhinitis is a common condition affecting 10-30% of the world’s population and its prevalence is increasing; it causes significant morbidity, disability and affects the quality of life of sufferers, and is responsible for approximately 3% of medical visits. It is considered a major public health problem.

In a survey of adults (≥ 18 years) in six European countries, the prevalence of clinically confirmed allergic rhinitis ranged from 17% to 29% (overall prevalence: 22.7%).

Allergic rhinitis is a major chronic disease that affects quality of life considerably, making it a significant and increasingly important health problem. It is one of the most common allergic diseases.

Immunotherapy is the only treatment capable of modifying the natural course of the allergic disease, modifying the patient’s immune response and with exposure to the allergen, symptoms are less intense and may even disappear.
