Grass pollen allergy: Are we still underestimating its clinical and social impact?

Every spring, millions of people go through the same cycle: nasal congestion, itchy eyes, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and difficulty concentrating. Although seasonal allergic rhinitis may seem like a minor condition, its clinical and social impact is far from negligible. In Europe, over 30% of allergic patients are sensitized to grass pollens, and in some studies, this figure rises to 70% in cases of polysensitization [1].

It is often managed suboptimally, with sporadic symptomatic treatment or underdosing, leading to recurrent visits to primary care, self-medication, work absenteeism, and a reduced quality of life. All this despite the availability of specific immunotherapy, which has strong evidence supporting its efficacy and cost-effectiveness [2,3].

In this context, it is essential to make progress on three key fronts:

  • Precision diagnosis: using molecular panels to distinguish between true sensitization and cross-reactivity.

  • Therapeutic adherence: especially in immunotherapy, where close monitoring and patient education make a significant difference.

  • Proactive prevention: including pollen level monitoring, exposure reduction strategies, and awareness campaigns from both pharmacies and clinics.

In the era of personalized medicine, it no longer makes sense to treat seasonal allergy as a minor issue. Correctly identifying candidates for immunotherapy, starting treatment early, and supporting them throughout the process can make all the difference.

Because when allergy affects your daily life, it’s no longer “just an allergy.”
